Don’t go on the internet. Too late.
There are a few different ways to do it. Stealing mail, physically stealing your ID card. Some ID thieves even look for documents in people’s trash and mail.
As for ways to prevent it, first and foremost use common sense. Being careful about personal information goes a long way in preventing ID theft. Credit monitoring is another option, albeit costly and not necessary most of the time. If you are too paranoid go for it.
If you are a victim of identity theft, contacting the police is the most logical thing you can do I think.
