As for ways to prevent it, first and foremost use common sense. Being careful about personal information goes a long way in preventing ID theft. Credit monitoring is another option, albeit costly and not necessary most of the time. If you are too paranoid go for it.

If you are a victim of identity theft, contacting the police is the most logical thing you can do I think.</description>
